Murder trial continues as witnesses describe scene

A courtroom drama continues today in Troup County Superior Court during the murder trial of Thomas E. Sessions, 55, of LaGrange.

Closing arguments are expected today and a verdict could be rendered as early as this afternoon. If convicted, Sessions could face life imprisonment.

Sessions was indicted by a grand jury last November for the Aug. 9, 2013, murder of 21-year-old Douglas Cameron — a murder prosecutors said happened in “cold blood,” but the defense claims was in self defense.

Aaron Hernandez Murder Trial: Fiancee Wants Perjury Charges Dropped In Odin Lloyd Death Investigation

Aaron Hernandez, who is currently on trial for the murder of Odin Lloyd, is probably saying a little prayer for his fiancée, Shayanna Jenkins. Jenkins has been charged with perjury for allegedly lying under oath about events pertaining to the death of Lloyd. Jenkins has already pled guilty, and now she wants the charges dropped. The information Jenkins supplied in the murder investigation may be false, but Jenkins' lawyers say she was mistaken, not lying.

San Jose man incompetent to stand trial for attempted murder

Man incompetent for attempted murder trial
August 23, 2014, 05:00 AM Daily Journal Staff Report
Raymond Iwase
An elderly man who prosecutors say fired a gun at his former doctor inside Seton Medical Center in Daly City over earlier pain treatment is not mentally fit to stand trial for attempted murder, according to two-court appointed doctors.

The doctors agreed Raymond Iwase, 85, of Daly City, is not able to aid his defense attorney against that charge plus one of assault with a deadly weapon in the April 23 shooting.

Competency is a person’s ability to aid in his or her own defense while sanity is a person’s mental state at the time of a specific incident.

Lawyer charged with murder solicitation targeted his former office manager, her lawyer says

By Martha Neil

A Texas lawyer charged with criminal solicitation of capital murder was seeking to kill his former office manager, an attorney for the claimed target says.
Ex-employee Maryann Uribe has been litigating in civil court in Nueces County against attorney Paul Andrews, 57, for several years. Earlier this year, Andrews was criminally charged with barratry in Bexar County, and on Wednesday he was arrested in the claimed murder-solicitation plot, which Bexar County authorities said involved a witness in the barratry case.
Attorney Bill Edwards of Corpus Christi represents Uribe. A prosecutor told him his client was the intended victim in the murder-for-hire, Edwards says, and "we're now discussing the security measures we should take around here,” the San Antonio Express News reports.

Man beat murder charge in detective’s death, but feds seek life term in drug case, citing slaying

State prosecutors dropped a murder case against Justin “J-Rock” Austin in the 2008 slaying of a Chicago police officer, alleging the defendant and others intimidated witnesses from testifying.
However, federal prosecutors are now seeking a life sentence for Austin in an unrelated Chicago drug case in which he has been convicted, contending that the Traveling Vice Lord leader was indeed responsible for the murders of off-duty detective Robert Soto and a female companion, Kathryn Romberg. Because the evidence is being presented at sentencing, rather than in an effort to convict Austin of the crimes, Austin's guilt needs to be proven only by a preponderance of the evidence rather than the beyond-reasonable-doubt standard that applies to criminal trials, the Chicago Tribune reports.
The two victims were sitting in Soto's parked vehicle outside Romberg's home on the West Side of the city early one morning when they were shot to death. The feds say Austin shot them in a case of mistaken identity, thinking that Soto was a rival drug dealer who was known by his street name of "Quick."
“It was survival of the fittest, the Wild Wild West. It was kill or be killed," prosecution witness Jeffery Scott testified during a Thursday hearing. He worked in Austin’s drug operation and is awaiting sentencing after taking a plea in a drug-distribution case.
U.S. District Judge Joan Lefkow was also told that Soto described to responding police officers, as he was dying, what his assailant's vehicle looked like.
Attorney Richard Kling represents Austin. In an opening statement, he said it was police pulling out the stops to make a case in the slaying of a fellow officer who pressured witnesses to point the finger at Austin. Had there been evidence to prove a murder case against his client, Cook County would have pursued it, Kling argued.

A Texas lawyer charged in an unusual felony barratry case is now facing a new charge for allegedly planning to eliminate a witness in the case.

Paul Andrews, 57, was arrested Wednesday in Corpus Christi, according to KSAT and the San Antonio Express-News. If convicted of criminal solicitation of capital murder, he could get from five to 95 years in prison.

An informant who said Andrews discussed the claimed plot with him tipped off Bexar County authorities.
The articles don't include any comment from Andrews or his legal counsel.

Michigan Innocence Clinic files appeal for man convicted of murder

KALAMAZOO (WKZO) -- The University of Michigan Law School Innocence Clinic has filed to have a judge look into what they call the wrongful conviction of a man in a 1990 double-murder case.
Jeffery Titus was convicted in 2002 for the murders of Doug Estes and Jim Bennett while hunting in Kalamazoo County. The Clinic's David Moran says, however, the two investigators that originally cleared Titus in the initial investigation were never consulted, and Titus also had an alibi that he was himself hunting in Calhoun County when the murders took place.

AZ death penalty flawed?

Arizona Loose With Its Rules in Executions, Records Show
("That improvisation is not unusual for Arizona, where corrections officials and medical staff members routinely deviate from the state's written rules for conducting executions, state records and court filings show. Sometimes they improvise even while a convict is strapped to a table in the execution chamber and waiting for the drugs coursing through his veins to take effect.")

Op-Ed Columnist: Where's the Justice at Justice? ("The Justice Department is trying to scuttle the reporters' privilege - ignoring the chilling effect that is having on truth emerging in a jittery post-9/11 world prone to egregious government excesses.Attorney General Eric Holder wants to force Risen to testify and reveal the identity of his confidential source on a story he had in his 2006 book concerning a bungled C.I.A. operation during the Clinton administration in which agents might have inadvertently helped Iran develop its nuclear weapon program.")
